Ekram murder: 39 awarded death, Minar among 16 acquitted

Feni Correspondent: A Feni court has sentenced 39 people to death penalty in the murder case of the district's former Fulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haque.

The court also acquitted 16 others including BNP leader Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury Minar as the charges were brought against them were not proved.

Judge Aminul Haque of Feni district and session judge court passed the order around 3:30pm on Tuesday.

36 accused of the case who have been jailed were produced before the court around 2:45pm, according to the court inspector of police A K Nozibul Islam.

Hafez Ahmed, Public Prosecutor (PP) of the court, said, “50 including the plaintiff and the investigation officer (IO) among 59 witnesses gave their statements in the case. 16 among 56 accused of the case gave their confessional statement before the court under section 164. Of the accuse, 39 are in jail, 19 on the run and another was killed in a gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

Ekram, 45, also the president of Awami League upazila unit, was shot and burnt to death in his car in Feni town's Academy area on May 20, 2014.
