Freedom Fighter killed in clash over unpaid debt

A Freedom Fighter was killed in a clash ensued over unpaid debt between two groups at Kawaldia village under Muksudpur in Gopalganj on Friday.

The deceased was known as Saheb Ali Khandoker, 75, a resident of the village.

Fifty more people sustained injuries in the clash while some houses were vandalized during the incident.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Muksudpur-Kashiani Circle) Anowar Hossain Bhuiyan confirmed the news.

Local ward Awami League general secretary Abu Rasel Shikder said, “Jalal took Tk 25,000 from Toiyob Ali Munshi of the same village on interest. Saheb Ali was a guarantor of the dealing. Since, Jalal took more money from many other people on interest and fled the area. Later, Jalal’s sister gave Tk 1 lakh to Jalal for paying debts.

On Friday morning, Toiyob Ali went to Sahel Ali for the unpaid money. Saheb then gave him Tk 10,000, but Toiyob Ali refused to receive it and they locked into a scuffle at one point of altercation.

As sequel to that, people of two groups locked into clash with lethal weapons, leaving 50 of both groups injured. Several houses were also vandalized during the incident.

The injured were taken to Muksudpur Hospital where Saheb Ali declared dead.

The ASP quoting doctor said, “There was no injury mark found on Saheb’s body. Reason of death cannot be told certainly before autopsy conducted.”
