3 killed in AL-BNP clash in Kishoreganj

KISHOREGANJ, Oct 12: A serious clash between Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Friday evening left at least three people dead and and 30 others injured at Shingpur village in Nikli Upazila in the district.

The deceased were –BNP activists Kanchan Mia, 45, his brother Hadith, 40, sons of Abbas Ali, and Awami League activist Waj Kuruni, 30, son of Abdul Malek, of the village.

According to local, the clash ensued when the leaders and workers of AL and BNP wanted to establish supremacy and to take control at Nikli Upazila in the district.

They said there had been a dispute between Awami League supporter Hasem-led ‘Madhur’ and BNP supporter Harun-led ‘Benipuira’ casts of the village for the last one year over establishing supremacy in the locality and ownership of a piece of land.

As a sequel to the enmity, people from the both communities engaged in a clash around 5:30pm on Friday.
 
A chase and counter chase took place during the melee that left Kuruni and Kanchan dead on the spot and 25 people injured. Of them, Kuruni was a supporter of Hasem group while Kanchan of Harun group.
 
Two of the injured — Hadith and Mojammel 25 — were rushed to Jahurul Islam Medical College Hospital in Bajitpur where the former succumbed his his injuries later. The condition of Mojammel was also stated to be critical.
 
Officer-in-charge of Nikli Police Station Mahbub Alam said additional policemen have been deployed in the area to fend off further trouble.
