A 40-km long tailback has been created at the western side of Bangabandhu Bridge in Sirajganj. Several thousands of vehicles clogged on both lanes of the highway, leaving passengers of the route in immense suffering.

The intensity of traffic congestion has been increasing since Tuesday (January 19) afternoon. It was seen in the evening, the tailback started from the round-circle of the Western part of Bangabandhu Bridge reached Chandaikona via Nalka intersection and Hatikumrul.

Freight truck driver Abdul Halim said, “I crossed the Bangabandhu Bridge around 12:30 pm. It is 5 o’clock to reach the 14-km from there.”

S I Paribahan driver Swadhin said, “It takes a maximum of three hours to reach Sirajganj from Dhaka. It took five hours to reach Bangabandhu Bridge round-circle.”

Mosaddek Ali, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Bangabandhu Bridge Pashchim Police Station, “Traffic was slow since morning due to dense fog. Besides, two separate accidents took place in Panchlia area in the morning and later in Chandaikona. Due to these reasons the traffic was disrupted, causing a lot of cars to get stuck and gradually caused traffic jams.”

In addition, as the construction work of the four lane highway is underway, only single-lane traffic is running in the area of Kaddarmor area. However, police are working relentlessly to reduce the traffic jam, he added.
