The government has imposed a lockdown for an unidentified period from Friday morning in five Rohingya refugee camps at Ukhia and Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar after a spike in coronavirus cases in recent days.
Deputy Refugee Commissioner Md Shamsud Douza Noyan confirmed the news.
“We imposed the restrictions from today (Friday) after sudden spikes in coronavirus cases in the five camps,” he said, adding Wednesday saw a single-day record in new infections.
“All five camps have been completely closed and the lockdown will be extended to the other camps later”, he said
On Wednesday alone, 45 Rohingya people tested positive for the virus out of 247 tested, said local health coordinator Toha Bhuiyan.
The same number also tested positive on Thursday.
