Flood hits Sunamganj district again

Due to heavy rains and onrush of hilly water, fresh flood has hit Sunamganj district. Floodwater has inundated many areas of the district, rendering thousands of people marooned. Many educational institutions have been declared closed due to worsening flood situation.

Many roads of Bishwamvarpur, Chhatak, Dowarabazar and Tahirpur upazilas have been submerged. Road communications of four upazilas have been disconnected with the district headquarters.

The Surma river was flowing 11cm above the danger level around 9.00am on Monday.

It is learnt that three places of Tahirpur-Bishwamvarpur-Sunamganj road have been submerged by floodwater. Water level of all the major haors and rivers in the district are rising significantly. Floodwater has entered many low-lying areas of the district, leaving many people marooned. 

Enamul Haq, headmaster of Balijuri Govt Primary School, Tahirpur, said, “Floodwater has entered our school and we have sent our students to their homes”.

Jahirul Islam, chairman of Luxmipur union, Dowarabazar, said, “Flood water has inducted many roads and damaged crop fields. The flood- affected people are facing huge sufferings, and they now need relief. 

Executive Engineer of Sunamganj Water Development Board (WDB) Md Samsuddoha said the district saw an average of 79 millimetre rainfall in the last 24 hours. Heavy rainfall may occur in India’s Meghalaya in next 24 hours which can worsen the flood situation.  The Surma river was flowing 11cm above the danger level around 9.00am on Monday. The water level of the river can increase.
