Flood victims facing untold sufferings in Sylhet

More and more areas of Sylhet are going under water every day, and large number of flood victims are facing untold suffering.
The authorities of 290 educational institutions have decided to close their institutions due to flood.
The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and its equivalent examinations, scheduled to begin on June 19, have been postponed due to floods. The new schedule of the examinations will be announced later.
Assistant Primary Education Officer Gokul Chandra Debnath said floodwater has entered 230 primary schools and we have declared closed the schools.
Various areas of Sylhet Sadar, Companiganj, Gowainghat and Jaintapur upazilas have already been inundated due to hill slopes and rain.
Floodwater has inundated many areas of Sylhet city. Floodwater and waste from the drains have started to enter houses in Sylhet city, creating chaos among the residents. City-dwellers passed the last night without electricity.
The major rivers in the district including the Surma river are flowing above the danger level.
Flood water has inundated many areas of Gowainghat upazila. Crops of several thousand hectors of land have been damaged. Many fish farms have been washed away. Farmers are facing acute food crisis and being affected by many waterborne diseases. There is also seen an acute cattle-feed crisis.
In Companiganj, floodwater has inundated many areas and entered houses, creating chaos among the residents. About 90 per cent people of the upazila have become marooned.
