Chattogram city-dwellers face public transport crisis

Chattogram city-dwellers, especially the working people, are facing great difficulties amid lack of public transport as Chattogram Metropolitan Transport Owners’ Association halted the public transportation service in the city due to a hike in fuel price.

After visiting different areas of the city on Saturday (August 6) morning, it was seen that hundreds of commuters were waiting at intersections for transports to reach their destinations.

Mujahedul Islam, an office goer, said, “He has to go to his office every day by bus. But today, he was not getting any bus. On the other hand, rickshaw and CNG are charging high fares from the commuters. It was not being possible to go to office with this excessive fare.”

Meanwhile, angry commuters are demonstrating by taking position on the main thoroughfare at Badamtoli intersection getting no public transport in Agrabad area of the port city. They alleged that they are facing great difficulties amid lack of public transport due to an increase in the price hike.

Belayet Hossain, president of Chattogram Metropolitan Transport Owners’ Association, said, “The government has announced to hike fuel price yesterday night suddenly. Later, many petrol pumps stopped supplying fuel. Again, some petrol pumps could not supply fuel due to huge crowd at the pumps. Under this circumstance, it is not possible to operate vehicles until the fare is adjusted.”
