62km embankment in 35 points at risk of collapse in Satkhira

Satkhira district has been witnessing moderate to heavy rain from Wednesday morning due to a depression over the Bay.

The water of the rivers in the coastal district is flowing over one to two feet high from the normal flow.

Many fish farms in Shyamnagar and Assasuni upazilas of the district have already been washed away due to tidal surge. Besides, about 62 km embankment in 35 points is at risk of collapse.Gabura Union Parishad Chairman Masudul Alam said several hundred fish farms of the union have already been washed away due to tidal surge. The embankment is at risk in different points. If the embankment collapses, the entire union will get flooded.

Meteorologist Julfikar Ali Ripon of Satkhira Met Office said under the influence of the depression over Bay, light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is occurring in Satkhira.  Swollen rivers can inundate many areas of the district due to the surge height of two/three feet above normal astronomical tide under the influence of depression.

About 30 millimeters rain was recorded in Satkhira in last 24 hour, he said.

Fish farmers said shrimp worth crores of taka got washed away with the rising tide water.
