Crops on hundreds of acres submerged in Rajbari

Heavy rainfall in the past couple of days has inundated hundreds of acres of agricultural land in Rajbari, damaging standing crops and flooding residential areas of villages, bringing misery for the locals.

Sources said, seasonal vegetables – tomatoes, eggplants, onions, cucumber and other crops in the district went under water due to heavy rain. Farmers are trying to save their hard-earned crops irrigating the land.

Four of five upazilas of Rajbari districts are located on the bank of Padma River. Farmers in those areas cultivated the Char lands as usual. But, the sudden rain water submerged them all.

Expressing sufferings, Bacchu Fakir, a farmer said, all my dreams are now under water now.

Malek Bepari, another farmer of the area said, every year we cultivate the land to get winter crops in advance. But, my tomato, eggplant and onion farms have submerged due to sudden rain.

Goalanda Upazila Agriculture Officer Khokon-uz-Jaman said, some low-lying areas at the bank of Padma River went under due to rain. The extent of loss could not be known yet.
