‘Single-use plastic won’t be allowed in Sundarbans’

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin has said tourists will not be allowed to take single-use plastic items in the Sundarbans.

He said, “Due to the use of plastic, the environment and biodiversity are being severely affected in the Sundarbans.”

The Minister said this at the discussion program titled “The Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historical leadership and development of the country” organized at the Department of Environment on the occasion of the Independence and National Day 2023 on Monday (March 27).

Speaking as the chief guest, Shahab Uddin instructed the secretary of the ministry to take necessary steps to stop the use of single-use plastic in the Sundarbans.  

He said a special initiative has been taken to check single-use plastic in 40 upazilas of 12 coastal districts of the country.

Terming Bangabandhu a rare leader in the world, the environment minister said the Father of the Nation dedicated his whole life for freedom and took the war-torn country to a stage of development.  

He said the dream of Bangabandhu is being fulfilled by his efficient daughter, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, by bringing smiles on the faces of helpless people.

Chaired by DoE Director General Dr Abdul Hamid, the discussion was addressed, among others, by Deputy Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Begum Habibun Nahar, Environment Secretary Dr Farhina Ahmed, Additional Secretary Iqbal Abdullah Harun, DoE Additional Director General Kazi Abu Taher and DoE Director Mirza Shawkat Ali.
