‘Traders hike onion prices through syndicate’

Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzak has said that onion productivity is high in Bangladesh. So, people raise the question normally why onion prices are unusual in the country? Different types of politics are done over the onions. The traders hiked prices of onions early ahead of the Eid.

The minister came up with the comments while visiting the modern onion protection technology at Udoypur village under Sujanagar upazila in Pabna on Tuesday (May 23).

The minister said, “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has instructed us to see why such crisis over the onions. We have been trying for last several years to find ways how to keep the onion prices under affordable level. A lot of onions destroy by rotting due to lack of reservation. Farmers became helpless and sell the onions mandatorily as they cannot reserve. So, they do not have onions anymore at that time. We are working over the local and modern system of protecting onions. For this, we have constructed 60 godowns each in different districts including Faridpur, Rajbari, Bhola and Pabna for onion reservation.”
