19 Myanmar nationals rescued, 5 of human trafficking gang held

Police in a drive rescued 19 Myanmar nationals, including children, from a house and detained five members of a human trafficking gang in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar district on Friday night.

The Myanmar nationals were rescued and five members of the human trafficking gang were detained while they were entering the Bangladesh territory illegally through Teknaf border.

Among the rescued, six were women, six men and seven children.

The detained human traffickers are— Zahid, 30, son of Selim; Jamal, 38, son of Md Hashem; Hazera, 50, wife of Amin Sharif; Yunus, 24, son of Ali zohr and Deen Islam, son of Mohammad Shah.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Teknaf Police Station Abdul Halim said acting on a tip-off, a team of police conducted a drive at the house of one Amin Sharif at Naitangpara in the upazila around 11:10 pm and detained them.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the alleged traffickers tried to flee the spot but police detained the five people in this connection.

Legal procedure is under process, the OC added.
