Case filed over attack on govt officials in Gazipur

A case has been filed against 15 persons over the assault allegedly carried out by a group of Awami League activists on Gazipur’s Kaliganj UNO Azizur Rahman and some Ansar members yesterday afternoon for not allowing them to park vehicles on the upazila parishad premises.

Ansar member Akram Hossain filed the case.

Faizur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kaliganj Police Station, confirmed the development on the night of Saturday (September 30).

The accused are Moktarpur Union AL President and Moktarpur UP chairman Alamgir Hossain, 48; Md Zakir, 47; Akram Hossain, 48; Siddikur Rahman, 43; Md Kajol, 34; Md Kamal Hossain Faraji; Md Hekim; Foisal Fakir, 45; Md Kalam; Jahangir member; Rubel Palowan, 32; Monir, 38; Jahidul, 28; and Siraj, 45.

On Saturday afternoon, the upazila AL arranged a memorial meeting at Kaliganj RRN Pilot Government High School ground on the occasion of the 39th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed Moiz Uddin Ahmed.

Around 1:00pm, UP Chairman Alamgir along with his several hundred followers on battery-run auto-rickshaws and motorcycles entered the upazila parishad premises and started chanting slogans when another function of Shilpakala Academy was underway at the upazila parishad auditorium on the occasion of National Girl Child Day.

Ansar members informed them about the national programme, but they did not stop chanting slogans. As AL men were requested to park their vehicles outside the upazila parishad premises, they became angry with some Ansar men. At one stage, the UNO reached the scene and also requested the chairman to park the vehicles outside.

Later, the leaders and activists who were accompanying the chairman attacked the UNO and some other government officials at the behest of the UP chairman. The UNO and an Ansar member were injured in the incident.
