Samrat’s bail cancellation order upheld

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the High Court order that cancelled the bail of Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat, the expelled Jubo League leader and the alleged casino kingpin, in a corruption case.

A three-member bench led by Justice Md Nuruzzaman passed the order on Wednesday (August 10).

Earlier on May 11, Samrat was released on bail spending over two and a half years in jail in four cases after Judge Al Asad Md Asifuzzaman of Dhaka Special Judge Court-6 granted him bail to Samrat in the corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The High Court on May 18 cancelled the bail to Samrat and ordered him to surrender before the lower court concerned in seven days in connection with the case. On May 24, the court sent him to jail upon his surrender to the trial court.

ACC Deputy Director Md Jahangir Alam, also investigating officer of the case, filed a corruption case on the allegation of acquiring illegal wealth worth Tk 2,94,80,087 on November 12, 2019.
