BNP to finalize DNCC mayor candidate this night

Senior Reporter: BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will sit with her party's standing committee members tonight (Saturday) to finalize the party's candidate for the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral post.

Sources said the meeting has been convened mainly to finalize the party's mayoral candidate for the DNCC by-polls.BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir may formally announce the name of the BNP candidate after the meeting.

Earlier on Monday night, the BNP chief had a meeting with the top leaders of her party-led 20-party alliance. At the meeting, the alliance leaders assured Khaleda of extending their support to the BNP candidate she will nominate to contest the by-election.

On the other hand, the ruling Awami League has decided to sell nomination papers for mayoral candidates on January 13–15. It is widely believed that former Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers’ and Exporters’ Association (BGMEA) president Atiqul Islam will be the party’s mayoral candidate for the DNCC by-polls. But no announcement has been made yet.

The Election Commission has already announced the schedule for the DNCC mayoral post, which fell vacant upon the death of mayor Annisul Huq.
