A heartbreaking reunion of mother-child and some questions

Aminul Islam: It was a heartbreaking moment when Nazma Khatun finally met her newborn, who survived a bullet injury while in the womb, sleeping in a glass box after an anxious wait for 11 days.

But the injured mother could not even touch her child then as it was undergoing ICU treatment. She just starred at her kept in the glass box in the ICU. This was the first time Nazma got a clear view of her daughter after the birth of the baby at Magura General Hospital following a two-hour-long Caesarean section conducted to save the mother and the child.

Finally, the mother touched and breastfeed her baby the moment was so heartbreaking. All the witnesses especially the doctors burst into tears in that moment. It must be her indomitable will to live that finally brought Suraiya (name of the newborn) to her mother`s lap on August 5, two weeks after her miraculous birth despite bullet injuries in her tiny body.

Doctors at the Special Child Care Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital took all precaution against possible infection finally permitted Nazma Khatun to breastfeed the bullet-survivor baby.  The team of doctors responsible for her care witnessed the moment of their reunion.

A bullet pierced the body of the premature baby on July 23 while inside her mother’s womb. The baby was later transferred to the Paediatric Surgery department at DMCH after her condition deteriorated.

Police, however, arrested a total of 6 six people over the incident. The baby’s father Bacchu Bhuiyan said Nazma saw her child sleeping in a glass box at 10:00am on Monday and then she burst into tears.

Doctors said the child is improving. Her jaundice is decreasing and platelet count increasing. However, she has been kept in the Special Care Baby Unit of the paediatric surgery unit as she is not out of danger yet.

DMCH child surgery department professor Abdul Hanif said the baby is improving. Her jaundice is subsiding, platelet increasing, and she is being breastfed once in two hours through a special process.

We do not want to see this type of incident in future. It was so cruel that a baby had to receive bullet wound while it was into its mother`s womb that is like haven for them and where they wait for a safe advent in the earth.

So, now these are the crucial questions for us that where are we living surrounding with cruelty? Is this earth is not safe for a tiny baby who live in its mother`s womb? Who will take this responsibility? Who will make the earth safe for them?

In a bid to stop this type of cruelty and insecurity we have to be more aware and to be actual human being. Side by side the government has to take proper initiative in this regard and take stern action against the culprits so that no further incident happened fearing the consequences.

We are the human being, the best creation in the earth. We believe that Allah has created human beings in the divine image. Allah formed us from the dust of the earth and gave us a special dignity among all the works of creation. Human beings have been made for relationship with Allah, to live in peace with each other, and to take care of the rest of creation.

Some theological understandings of human beings have focused on humanity`s role as Allah`s representative on earth to manage and care for it. So, if we do this type of deeds one after another then what will be the differences between human beings and animals?
