Sundarbans blaze: Fire Service begins work

The fire service, forest department, and villagers have jointly started working to douse the blaze in Sundarbans.

They started the tasks in Amurbunia forest area of Chandpai range of East Sundarbans around 8:00am on Sunday (May 5).

Earlier, three fire units rushed to the spot yesterday evening but could not start their tasks.

Kazi Mohammad Nurul Karim, divisional forest officer (DFO) of Sundarbans eastern division, said three units of fire service started extinguishing the fire by spreading water from Bhola river in Sundarbans this morning.

Meanwhile, the forest department has formed a three-member probe committee to find the causes of the fire, the extent of the fire. Rana Dev, assistant conservator of forests (ACF), Chandpai Range, Sundarbans, was made the chief of the probe committee. The committee is asked to submit its report within next 7 days.

Mamun Mahmud, Deputy Director of Fire Service and Civil Defense in Khulna Division, said that five units of fire service have arrived in the area to douse the blaze. Three units are currently in operations. Besides, Navy, Forest Department, Police and local authorities are also providing the assistance.
