Country's highest road collapse halts vehicular movement

Bandarban Correspondent: Vehicular movement has come to a halt as Thanchi-Alikadam road in Bandarban, the highest road in the country, has collapsed following sporadic downpour.

According to the local sources, there have been four collapses in 12 kilometer area of 33 kilometer-long and 18 feet wide Thanchi-Alikadam road. There have been deep pits at many places in the thrilling road. It may take at least a month to repair the road.

Contacted, Alikadam Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Nairuzzaman told risingbd.com that the vehicular movement in the road has remained stopped due to the collapse. It is unclear when the road will be in operation.



On July 14 in 2015, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the much awaited road through video conferencing. The Roads and Highways Department started the construction work of the road in 1991. Later, the charge of constructing the road was given to the Engineering Construction Battalion of the Bangladesh Army. The construction work of the road completed at a cost of Tk 120 crore in April of 2015.
