That Saudi oil minister dies

That Saudi oil minister who caused the West to tremble by wailing for oil is no more. Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani died in London on Tuesday at the age of 91.

King Faisal bin Abdulaziz appointed Yamani as oil minister. He was an eyewitness to the assassination of King Faisal in 1975. That same year, Yamani was abducted from an OPEC meeting by Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, better known as Carlos Da Jacqueline.

Yamani was known for its elegant behavior and trademark beard. During his 24 years in office, he established Saudi Arabia as the world’s largest crude oil producer. He became famous for creating global inflation with the ‘oil push’ in the seventies. Yamani was fired in 1986 for failing to raise crude oil prices.
