Three sub-types of Omicron spreading more in capital

Three different sub-types of Omicron, the mostly contagious variant of coronavirus, have been spreading more in Dhaka, according to a recent study of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b).

The organization published a report on its website on Monday (January 24).

According to the icddr,b report, 1,376 samples were tested in its lab during the first two weeks of January this year. Of them, 28 percent was found positive for coronavirus of which 69 percent was infected with Omicron variant.

Analyzing the genome sequence of Omicron, it has been found that there are three sub-types of Omicron in Dhaka city. These are matched with African, Euro-American and Asia Pacific Omicron types.

According to icddr,b, the first Omicron case was detected on December 6 in Bangladesh. Although it was officially announced on December 11. In the same month, Omicron was detected in bodies of five out of 77 coronavirus patients in Dhaka city tested in icddr,b’s lab. The rest was infected with Delta variant.

The report said, 29 people infected with Omicron were interviewed. Of them, 13 were males and 16 females. There were no symptoms in bodies of 27 people infected with Omicron.

Of the 29 people interviewed, 24 received two doses of coronavirus vaccines. Three people took single dose each. Only one of them was hospitalized for one day. One of the victims of this type of coronavirus is Saudi returnee. The rest had no history of travel.
