Inmate allegedly beaten to death in Madaripur

An inmate has allegedly been beaten to death in Madaripur district jail. 

The deceased was identified as Hazrat Matubbar, 50, son of Tofel Matubbar of Gachhbari under sadar upazila.

He breathed his last around 8:00am on Wednesday (October 21) while undergoing treatment in Madaripur Sadar Hospital.

The body has been kept at morgue of the hospital for autopsy.

Family members and relatives claimed that he was beaten up to death inside jail. However, police said an unusual death (UD) case will be held in this connection. Magistrate will investigate into the incident.

According to sources of Madaripur district jail, Two separate cases were filed with with Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station on July 19 and July 22 over the incident of clash took place at Gachhbaria under sadar upazila. On September 27, Hazrat Matubbar appeared before court willingly. Then, the court sent him to jail. Since, he had been in jail. On early Wednesday (October 21), he was admitted to the district sadar hospital after he had fell sick suddenly. There, he died around 8:00am.

Meanwhile, deceased’s Sabbir Matubbar said alleged that his father was beaten up to death in the jail. He also demanded justice for his father.

However, Jailer of Madaripur district jail Shankar Majumder denied the allegation.

He said, “The inmate was admitted to the hospital as he fell sick. Later, he died of heart attack in the hospital.”

Abdul Mannan Mia, additional superintendent of police (ASP) in Madaripur, “For now, an unnatural death (UD) case will be filed. As the matter occurred inside the jail, the executive magistrates will investigate the matter. Then police will take legal actions according to the report.”
