College-student drowns while abandoning idol in river

A college student drowned in Gorai river in Kushtia while abandoning idol.

The deceased was known as Deeto Baghchi, 19, son of Arun Baghchi Bappi of Milpara Dosto Mohammad Lane of district town. He was also HSC examinee of Kumarkhali Government College this year.

The incident took place in the Gorai river adjacent to Tajlakshmi ghat on Friday (July 1).

According to witnesses, several youths including one Aritri were abandoning idol. Aritri was about to drown in the river. Then, Baghchi went forward to save him and drowned. Locals took him to Kushtia General Hospital immediately where duty doctors declared him dead.

Ashraful Islam, resident medical officer of the hospital, said, “The person died before he had taken to the hospital. The body was kept in the morgue.”

Kushtia Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sabirul Alam confirmed the matter.
