Tens of thousands of civilians still missing in Syria: UN

Tens of thousands of civilians who were detained during Syria’s ten-year civil war are still missing, according to UN.

Thousands more had been tortured or killed in custody. A new report on war crimes or crimes against humanity during the country’s civil revealed the information, BBC reported on Tuesday (March 02).

Victims and witnesses described the situation as “unimaginable suffering”, including the rape of girls and boys as young as 11.

The report says the issue has now become a ‘national trauma’ that must be addressed.

The conflict in Syria began in 2011 with a series of deadly crackdowns on anti-President Bashar al-Assad protests; That later took the form of civil war which is still going on. At least 380,000 people have died in the decade-long conflict, and half of the country’s population has fled their homes. At least 6 million Syrians have taken refuge in various countries.
