Majnu sentenced to life term for raping DU student

Mohammad Majnu, a drug addict and vagabond, has been sentenced to life term imprisonment for raping a Dhaka University student.

The judge of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 Mosammat Quamrunnahar delivered the verdict on Thursday.

A second year female student of Dhaka University was allegedly raped by Mohammad Majnu at Kurmitola in Dhaka on January 5.

According to the case statement, the victim got off a university bus at Kurmitola bus stop at about 7:30pm and started walking to Shewra Rail Gate area to visit one of her friends.

Majnu captured and took her to a nearby bush and raped her. After regaining consciousness, the girl went to the house of her friend, who took her to a hospital.

Victim’s father filed a case with Cantonment Police Station over the rape and attempt to murder incident.

The incident sparked widespread protests at Dhaka University and in major cities.

The Rapid Action Battalion on January 8 arrested Majnu, a man in his thirties, near Cantonment Railway Station area.
