Uttara girder accident: Helper Rakib operating crane

Helper Rakib Hossain was operating the crane from which a huge girder fell on a private car at Uttara in the capital, leaving five people dead. At that time, main operator (crane driver) Al Amin was giving direction to helper Rakib Hossain.

Commander Khandaker Al Moin, director of the legal and media wing of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), said this at a press briefing held at its media center in the city on Thursday.

According to RAB, Al Amin, the main operator of the crane, has a licence to drive light vehicles but he had no licence to drive heavy vehicles. After receiving crane operating training in 2016, he worked in two/three projects and started working as a crane operator in BRT project in May of 2022.

Rakib started working as a crane helper in the project three months ago. He had no crane driving training. On the day of the accident, Al Amin and Rakib started operating the crane at 2.00 pm, the RAB official said.

Earlier, RAB arrested nine people including the crane driver over the incident. On Monday, at least five people, including children, of the same family were killed when a 150-tonne girder fell on their car from a crane during BRT project work in Uttara.
