Salaries, allowances of village police being increased

The government is going to hike salaries and allowances of about 47,000 village policemen (Dafathers and Mohalladars) after five years.

A letter in this regard from the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives has been sent to the Ministry of Finance for further action.

Salaries and allowances of Dafadar and Mohalladars is being increased by 15 to 233 percent. However, the honorariums of Union Parishad chairman and members are remaining the same.

Currently, Bangladesh has a total of 4,576 Union Parishads, the smallest administrative unit in the country. There are 10 village policemen working under each union parishad.

Among them, one ranked as Dafadar and nine as Mohalladars.The salary of the Dafadar of the Union Parishad is being increased from Tk 7,000 to Tk 8,500, or 21. 43 percent. And, their retirement allowance is being increased from Tk 60 ,000 to Tk 2,00,000, or a whopping 233 percent.

The salary of a Mohalladar is being increased from Tk 6,500 to Tk 7,500, or 15.38 percent. And, their retirement allowance is being increased from Tk 50,000 to Tk 1,50,000. The retirement benefits will increase by 200 percent.

The village policemen will get 50 percent of their salaries from the government treasury while the rest from their respective union councils.
