Gang-rape at hostel: Prime accused Saifur arrested

Police have arrested Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader Saifur Rahman, the prime accuse in a case filed over the gang-rape of a woman at the hostel of Murari Chand (MC) College in Sylhet on Saturday night.

Saifur was arrested from Noarai Ghat area under Noarai union of Chhatak upazila in Sunamganj district on Sunday (Sept 27) morning, confirmed Assistant superintendent of Sunamganj police Md Billal Hossain.

Police are working to arrest the other accused of the case, he said.

Earlier on Friday (September 25) afternoon, a group of BCL leaders and activists forcibly confined a couple who were going to visit the college campus.

Later, the woman was gang-raped by BCL men at the hostel of Murari Chand College on Saturday night.

The victim's husband filed a case against nine people including six named Chhatra League activists with Shah Paran Police Station.

The accused are Saifur Rahman, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Roni, Arjun Lasker, Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, Tarek Ahmed and Rabiul Islam.
