4 killed in train-auto-rickshaw collision in Nilphamari

Four passengers of an auto rickshaw were killed and four others injured in a collision between a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a commuter train in Nilphamari on Wednesday (January 26) morning.

The incident took place around 7:30 am at Daroyani railway crossing in Nilphamari sadar upazila.

The deceased were identified as Shefali Begum, 35, Romana, 35, Sahera, 35 and Minara Begum, 25. All the deceased and injured were the workers of Uttara Export Processing Zone (EPZ).

The auto rickshaw was crossing the Daroyani railway crossing when Simanta Express, a commuter train coming from Khulna to Chilahati hit the auto rickshaw. The collision forced the auto rickshaw to fall a few feet away from its prior location and killed Shefali Begum on the spot.

Later, some members of a firefighting unit with the help of locals took the seven injured to a local hospital, where Romana and Sahera died, said police and locals.

Bakinur, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Nilphamari Police Station, said the four severely injured people were admitted to a hospital. Among them, three were sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated but a woman named Minara Begum died on the way to hospital.
