Tea workers announce to block road if demand for pay hike not met

Bangladesh Tea Workers’ Union has announced to block the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Habiganj if the demand for a hike in daily wages is not met.

Nripen Pal, acting general secretary of Bangladesh Tea Workers’ Union, confirmed the matter on Saturday (August 13) night.

Nripen Pal said, “Tea workers returned to their respective gardens following strike and processions yesterday. They will continue the movement until their demand is met. The tea workers will form human chains and stage demonstrations to their respective gardens as there are holydays on Sunday and Monday. We will put a barricade on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway on Tuesday if our demand for a hike in daily wages is not met.”

Tea garden workers are demanding a daily wage of Tk 300, while they are currently paid Tk 120.
