The World Food Safety Day is being observed today. The day is marked by the World Health Organisation (WHO) annually on June 7 to prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks and improve human health. The observance highlights the message that food should stay safe at every stage - from production to harvest, processing, storage, distribution, preparation and consumption.

The day was set aside by the United Nations in 2018 to raise awareness of food safety. However, the National Food Safety Day in Bangladesh is observed on February 2 every year in a bid to ensure safe food for the nation.

Every year, WHO comes up with a theme that focuses on the current and potential challenges around food safety. This year the theme of World Food Safety Day is 'Safer food, better health'.

According to a report of WHO, one in ten people globally are affected by foodborne diseases annually. While safe food is a marker of good health, unsafe food can cause many diseases. Poor food quality contributes to worsening health conditions, such as impaired growth and development, micronutrient deficiencies, non-communicable or communicable diseases and mental illness. Foodborne diseases are usually invisible to the eye and infectious or toxic, making food safety a critical issue.

Food adulteration has been the biggest hurdle towards ensuring secured and safe food for the people while there is no alternative to safe and nutrient food to ensure a healthy nation.

Many initiatives have been taken in Bangladesh and elsewhere in the world for food safety. Government and non-government organizations are working together to raise public awareness to ensure safe food for all. However, ensuring safe food becomes a big challenge.

To create awareness on food safety prominent poet, lyricist and composer Mahbubul Khalid has penned a song titled Amra Vejal Mukto Khaddo Chai (We want Safe Food For All). The lyricist himself composed the music of the song in which a bunch of young singers including Nandita, Abanti Sithi, Priyanka, Muhin, Sabbir, Nahid, Sakib rendered their voices.

The song has been published on Mahbubul Khalid’s musical website ‘khalidsangeet.com’. Beside, a music video has also been released on the lyricist's YouTube channel 'Khalid Sangeet'.

Mentionable, poet, lyricist and composer Mahbubul Khalid has penned and tuned a vast number of songs including various days or observance, popular and renowned personalities, social awareness etc.
