Symbol allocation for 1st phase upazila election today

The allocation of electoral symbols for the first phase of the Sixth Upazila Parishad election will begin on Tuesday (April 23). The candidates can start their campaign from today.

Atiar Rahman, Election Commission’s deputy secretary of the election management wing said, according to the schedule of the first phase, the appeals were settled on Sunday. The deadline for withdrawal of candidature was Monday (April 22). After completing the nomination paper scrutinizing, the numbers of valid candidates are- 1,786. This number may increase.

Allocation of electoral symbols among the candidates will start on April 23. After getting their symbols, the candidates can start their campaign on that day. The voting in 150 upazilas will be held on May 8, he added.

Besides, 2,055 candidates submitted their nomination papers in the second phase of upazila polls.

Additional Secretary of EC Ashok Kumar Debnath said 730 candidates submitted nomination papers for the posts of chairman, 763 candidates for the post of vice-chairman and 562 candidates for the post of female vice chairman.

According to the schedule for the second phase, the deadline for submitting nomination papers was Sunday. Last date for withdrawal of candidature is 30th April. Symbols will be allocated on May 2. The voting in 161 upazilas will be held on May 21.
