‘Facility increased, quality decreased at universities’

University Grants Commission Chairman Professor Kazi Shahidullah yesterday said that the facilities have been increased years after years in the public universities but the universities are not able to increase the quality of education in the country.

‘University teachers have to play a leading role in making their students qualified and efficient,’ he added.

Kazi Shahidullah came up with the comments while addressing a webinar as the chief guest on the occasion of Islamic University’s 41st founding anniversary on Sunday night.

He said that students must have to pay heed to achieve the extra-curricular experience besides their regular studies.

In order to survive in the job sector in line with the times, students need to acquire basic knowledge as well as language and technical skills, he suggested.

While talking about regarding online classes, he said the Corona cases have been increased again. We will have to wait another 4-6 months to get the Corona vaccine. Therefore, there is no alternative way to online classes to continue educational activities in the universities, the UGC chairman opined.

‘Considering the difficulties of the students, we have selected the needy students and arranged loans on easy terms for the purchase of smartphones.’

Presided over by IU Vice-Chancellor Professor Shaikh Abdus Salam, IU pro-vice-chancellor Professor M Shahinoor Rahman and acting registrar SM Abdul Latif spoke as special guests.

Assistant Professor Mostafizur Rahman, chairman of IU Folklore Studies department, conducted the webinar while Islamic University Day celebration committee convenor Professor Ahsan-ul-Ambia delivered the welcome speech.
