Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said that upazila elections are being held in more competitive way than national parliament elections. The Commission is continuing its efforts to ensure that the elections are not influenced.

All kinds of preparations have been taken to make the elections fair, he said.

The CEC made the remarks while addressing a press conference over the upazila elections on Tuesday (May 7).

A total of 141 upazilas around the country will go to the polls in the first phase on May 8.

The upazila elections will take place in four phases. Elections in the second phase will be held on May 23, in the third phase on May 29, and in the fourth phase on June 5.

May 8 has been declared as general holiday for elections in 141 upazilas to allow the voters to cast their votes without any hassle.

A total of 418 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed for the first phase of the Upazila Parishad polls.

The BGB will work as a mobile and striking force from May 6 to May 10 to maintain peace and order in the election areas.
