No bar to hold Jhenaidah-1 by-polls on June 5

There is now no bar for the Election Commission (EC) to hold the by-election to Jhenaidah-1(Shailkupa) constituency on June 5.

The Supreme Court has stayed a High Court order that postponed the by-election.

Chamber judge of the Appellate Division of the SC Justice M Enayetur Rahim halted the High Court order on Wednesday following a petition filed by Awami League-backed candidate Md Nayeb Ali Joardar challenging the HC order of stay.

On May 6, The HC bench of Justice Md Zakir Hossain stayed for 21 days the process of holding the by-polls to Jhenaidah-1 constituency, following a petition filed by Nazrul Islam Dulal Biswas, an independent candidate.
