Massive damage to coastal region, Dhaka experiences rainfall

The powerful cyclone Remal swept across the coast of Bangladesh. Currently it is crossing West Bengal-Khepupara coast through Mongla port’s southwestern direction. The cyclone is likely to cross the coast in a short time, said the Meteorological Department.

Houses, shelters, and shops were damaged due to the impact of the cyclonic storm Remal. Though the number of victims could not be known yet. However, at least two deaths caused by the cyclone, said State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md Mohibur Rahman.

Sources said Mongla, Shaymnagar of Satkhira, Kalapara, Kuakata and Khepupara of Patuakhali witnessed heavy damages due to the cyclone. Houses, and trees were destroyed by the stormy wind along with the rain. Flood water entered into several locations breaking the embankment.

With winds gusting up to 120 kilometres per hour, severe cyclonic storm Remal made landfall in the coasts of Bangladesh, bringing heavy rains that flooded homes and farmland, and leaving a trail of destruction. The landfall process began at 8:00 pm on Sunday over the adjacent coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh.

Earlier, Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik, meteorologist of the Directorate of Meteorology said that following the cyclone, heavy rains may occur in different parts of the country including the coast on Monday.

Dhaka witnessed a heavy rainfall on Monday as Cyclone Remal is crossing the coast. Rain was reported in Dhaka's several areas including Uttara, Mirpur, around 7:00am.
